I wanted to be an educated person, I loved the beaches and had no love for L.A.'s smog. So I earned a double-major B.A. at UC Santa Barbara in 1970 while working part-time. The next year, I married my girlfriend Cathy. We replaced our love of the California beaches for the Rocky Mountain West -- making a new life for ourselves in Utah where I would work for a Congressman, Senator, Governor and the Mayor of Salt Lake City while earning a M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Utah -- which hired me. I have taught 40,000+ students (law and government courses) while involved in 30+ political campaigns. I am still teaching folks our age (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at the University of Utah while speaking regularly at senior citizen residences and libraries. Since 1980, we have hosted international students in our home (29 nations now) -- bringing the world into our home. I have survived bike and car accidents + two declared states of emergency. Proud of our son Ross and daughter Dominique, and enjoy our granddaughters! I feel so fortunate.

School Story

LCHS was a struggle. Turbulent home life. I survived working part-time, writing editorials and features and sports for the Iliad school paper, acting in plays ("Teahouse of the August Moon" and "The Boy Who Changed the World"), and basketball. I am eternally grateful to teachers Cecil Osoff and Robert Barker for their understanding and encouragement!). I was a cheerleader (JV) and played basketball (lettered JV). Chess Club helped me think strategically. Being house manager for the "Music Man" musical helped me learn to manage. My LCHS senior year, my friends Gary Crooks and Bruce Wilson and Cindy Fuller were wonderful to me beyond words. (Sadly, Bruce and Cindy have passed on. Gary and I were roommates at UCSB.). Summer '65 after graduation, I earned an excellent grade in a freshman English course at Glendale College -- important because I concluded that my time at LCHS had prepared well me to pursue future university studies.
